Unlocking intergenerational opportunities for youths and seniors
The youths and seniors of Allkin Youth Service and Active Ageing Centre @ Sengkang 182 forged newfound bonds through a time of handicrafts and karaoke with the seniors.
Initiated as part of Allkin Youth Service’s Project Giveback, our youth beneficiaries had the opportunity to build their confidence by stepping outside their comfort zone to organise a simple Chinese New Year get-together for the seniors of Active Ageing Centre @ Sengkang 182. Together, the youths and seniors co-designed festive fans by tapping into each other’s creativity and bonded over a shared love for karaoke.
Tapping on their interests and strengths, the youth not only engaged seniors in hands-on craft activities but took the initiative to communicate with them through non-verbal gestures – demonstrating their intentionality to overcome language barriers to build new connections. Our seniors were thrilled to teach and share their favourite karaoke oldies in return!
By giving back in their own ways, our youth beneficiaries gained a new perspective on seniors in the community, a platform to discover and unleash their strengths and an appreciation of how to use their leisure time meaningfully!
We would like to thank our youths and seniors for welcoming and embracing each other through this event, as well as Youth Corps Singapore and National Youth Council Singapore for the ongoing support that transformed our youths’ plans into reality!
