Lightening the Load of Parenting

As a stay-at-home mother of three boys, Mdm Aminah is no stranger to the many questions that come with parenting. But with her two older sons already in their teenage years, she found herself worrying about the journey she would take with her youngest.

Imaan, now seven, experienced speech delay when he was younger and needed additional support in his early years. With support from his preschool and early intervention, he gradually became more comfortable interacting with others and was better able to adapt in a school setting.

We wanted it to be client-centric, so that the content feels relevant to parents and can be applied in their everyday lives.

Still, the transition to Primary 1 felt like a big step. For Mdm Aminah, one concern stood out.

“I was worried about bullying,” she shares.

It was during this period that the Parent Resource Kit (PRK) became especially helpful.

Mdm Aminah was first introduced to the PRK during home visits with Allkin senior social worker Louise. Comprising 13 practical guides, the kit became a useful starting point for conversations about parenting, helping them talk through Mdm Aminah’s concerns and explore practical ways to support Imaan at home and in school.

She appreciated that the guides were colourful and easy to understand. Information was presented clearly, with pictures and illustrations that made it simple to follow. For a busy parent like her, this mattered.

Instead of searching online and wondering which advice to trust, she now had a practical, evidence-based resource she could return to when faced with a new challenge.

As Imaan prepared for Primary 1, the PRK helped Mdm Aminah think beyond timetables or school routines. It encouraged her to consider how she could help him adjust to a bigger social environment, build relationships with classmates and teachers, and navigate new expectations with confidence. Other topics also spoke to everyday moments at home, from understanding how child-led play supports learning, to picking up practical tips on healthy eating. These everyday parenting moments were exactly what the PRK was created to support. The PRK team observed that while parenting information is widely available, it is not always easy for parents to know what is credible, or how to apply it in daily life. They also saw an opportunity for practitioners to benefit from a simple, evidence-based resource that could support conversations with families and make practical guidance easier to share. “The topics in the kit come from the needs we have observed in our work with families. We wanted it to be client-centric, so that the content feels relevant to parents and can be applied in their everyday lives,” shared Jessie, senior social worker and one of the team members who initiated the idea for the PRK.
Bringing the resource to life was a collaborative effort over three years. Different teams contributed their practice knowledge and expertise, and external partners were also consulted to strengthen the content and ensure it remained grounded, credible, and relevant. For practitioners, the value of the PRK lies not only in its content, but in how it opens conversations with parents. Rather than simply handing the guides to families, practitioners go through them together, introduce strategies and, where possible, try activities during sessions. “I was very encouraged when one of the mothers I was working with shared that the tips in the book seemed manageable for her, and that she was willing to give them a try,” shared Phoebe, a social worker at Allkin. Today, Imaan is settling well into Primary 1, where his favourite subject is Mathematics. For Mdm Aminah, parenting still comes with new questions, but the PRK has made support feel more manageable. At its heart, the Parent Resource Kit is about making parenting support easier to access in the everyday moments that matter most – a starting point that helps families feel more confident, and a little less alone.
